Thursday afternoons

Filed under: Uncategorized — lawsonjolly @ 6:00 am

Thursday afternoons at the Jolly home are special times.  Judy and I pick up our two granddaughters from school, and they spend the afternoon with us.  There seems to be a mutual excitement of being together.

It is a special time in that Judy always has something  for them to do.  It is not that they simply come to the house and pass the time in a safe environment. We do not go about our interests and expect them to entertain themselves.  No, not at all.  Grandma is always ready.  Usually, she and the girls have agreed beforehand what their next project might be.

It is always a learning experience for the granddaughters.  It ranges from a garden activity,  planting  flowers, the care of a fig tree,  picking fruit, retrieving pine cones for a display, the arranging of flowers in a vase, an art project,  the setting of a beautiful table, and cooking.

The cooking has become a favorite.  I have watched Judy and the girls as they bake various things such as cakes and cookies.  I have watched them make pumpkin pies and apple crisp.

The smiles on the faces of these granddaughters express their joy.  They have peeled these apples that have come straight from our neighbors’ orchard in upstate New York.  Each year as the neighbors  come south, they bring us apples.  The girls are mixing the ingredients  and then they will put the ingredients and the apples together.  This special dessert is then placed in the oven.  When it  comes out smelling so delicious, we  decide to have a snack  since Grandpa can’t wait for dessert and wants some while it is still hot.  We all then enjoy the apple crisp.

I have the pleasure of watching these three ladies and taking pictures of these memorable Thursday afternoons.  This is indeed a special time for all of us.

I often observe how these granddaughters have such eagerness to learn and experience things from their grandmother.  Though they are blessed with special parents who are constantly teaching them, there is something special about being at the home of grandparents.  Don’t you agree?  All of us who were blessed to be around grandparents know that we have learned much from them.  When these young ladies become adults, they will be blessed with these  memories.  We can never forget those special times we spend with grandparents.  Of course, the real blessing is to those of us who are grandparents and have the gift of time with our grandchildren.

Do you recall special memories of your grandparents?  Then treasure them and be thankful.  Will you as a grandparent seek to build memories with your grandchildren?  I believe that God will bless the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren when there is a bond of love.

“Children’s children are a crown to the aged . . . .”  (Proverbs 17:6)        “Then they can train younger women . . . .”  (Titus 2:4)
