For Love’s Sake

Amazing the power of love!  Of course, law has an amazing power also.  I know.  As I was growing up, there were certain laws at our house.  Sure, my parents loved me, but there were certain things I had to do because it was “the law.”

Most everyone knows those certain rules or laws in the family.  You will not eat those sweets!  You will take the garbage out!  You will take a bath!  You will go to bed!  Remember those days and those rules?  Of course it was out of love and seeking to create responsibility in us that our parents had those “laws.”

We had one at our house that was really hard.  It had to do with food on the table.  It was like this.  Whatever is on the table in those bowls, you will put some on your plate,  and once that food is on your plate, you will eat it all.  Most of the time it was ok, but there were certain times . . . .

I could walk through the door and smell it.  I wished I hadn’t come home for supper.  There it was in that bowl.  That green, slimy stuff called spinach!  When the bowl came to me, I wanted to pass in on, but I knew I had to take some.  I would take just as small a helping as possible, but often I was prompted to take a little bit more.  And there it was on my plate.  I had to eat it all.  I would do everything to get out of it, but there was no escape.

My parents would encourage me.  They would tell me about Pop-eye!  “Don’t you want to grow up to be like him?”  Now really, have you ever taken a good look at him?  Who wants to look like that?

Somehow I finally made it through those meals.  But I had a feeling.  It probably would be expressed this way.  “When I grow up and move out of this house, we will never have spinach at my house.”  Well, I did grow up.  I moved out of that house.  I got married.  We had our home.  And then I came in one evening . . . and oh, I could smell it.  Spinach!  I forgot to tell her!

But I went in and expressed how good it smelled.  At the table, I took the largest helping of spinach I had ever taken in my life.  And I cleaned my plate!  Actually, I enjoyed it.  I love spinach today!

What’s the difference?  I ate it as a boy, but not because I wanted to, but because I had to.  It was the “law.” Now I eat the spinach, and enjoy it because of love! I love my wife!  There is a real difference in whether we do things because of law or love.

We need to examine much of what we do . . . especially at church.  Do we attend, teach, sing, give, etc. because we see it as law?  Or is it so inbred in us to do it that we respond because of heritage?  There is even the possibility that we are scared of God and fear what would happen to us if we didn’t keep the “law.”  I am convinced that what God wants from us, whether church attendance, reading His Word, tithing, serving in the church, or whatever, is that which comes from love and not a law or fear.  Love for Him makes a real difference in our commitment and service.  Serving Him because of  love will bring joy and happiness to us as we labor for Him.

“For Christ’s love compels us . . . .”  (2 Corinthians 5:14)  “Serve the Lord with gladness . . . .”  (Psalm 100:2)
