An Act of Compassion

Filed under: Uncategorized — lawsonjolly @ 5:00 am

We can define certain words, but we understand the meaning more when we see the evidence.  It is much like saying I would rather see a sermon than hear one.  Compassion is a word that describes having pity, showing mercy, or showing kindness.  One lady gave a wonderful testimony of her compassion.

We often visit cemeteries because of Judy’s research.  Recently at a cemetery she met a lady who was placing flowers at her family plot.  She told about the various family members buried there.  She then pointed to one specific grave.  Then she told Judy the story.

She came one day to clean the family plot.  As she approached, she realized there was a small white cross that marked  a burial that  had taken place since her last visit.  This was a surprise to her because she knew of no family members who had died recently.  She read the marker and realized that this person was of no kin. It was the grave of a four-year old boy.

When she contacted those responsible, they were extremely apologetic and offered to do whatever she requested. They clearly admitted it had been a mistake.  She asked about the young boy.   She was told  the child had virtually been abandoned.  The mother had been on drugs and showed  no interest in the child.  There did not seem to be any caring family members.  The funeral director again told her they would move the child to another plot.

This kind lady say no.  She insisted that they leave the child buried in her family plot.  And so they did.  This benevolent, compassionate lady told Judy, “This is my child now.  He is a member of our family.  With every holiday that I place flowers here, I include him.  I also bring flowers and place them at his marker on his birthday. I want to take care of him.”

Now, I ask you, isn’t that truly an act of compassion?  Oh, but if the world had more expressions of such compassion!

“. . . be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.”  (1 Peter 3:8)   “Be kind and compassionate to one another . . . .”  (Ephesians 4:32)   “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion . . . . ”  (Colossians 3:12)

  1. So true, we all need more compassion and love. In fact, we need to ask the Father to show us those around us who are struggling and just need someone to show them a lil understanding, compassion & love. ❤
