Volcano Irazu

Filed under: Uncategorized — lawsonjolly @ 5:00 am

Costa Rica has many volcanos.  Irazu was the one which we favored.  We could see it from our bedroom window.  It, along with most of the volcanos in Costa Rica, is considered active.  However, the last eruption of Irazu was 1963, but it continued to 1965.  The city of San Jose and the surrounding area had constant showers of  ash.  Many people developed breathing problems because of the polluted air.  Though it is considered dormant today, clouds of hydrogen and carbon dioxide gas can still be seen.

Irazu rises 11,260 feet above sea level.  At the top you can see both the Atlantic and  Pacific oceans.  However, there are not many clear days that make it possible.  There is a constant wind and it is cold, near freezing at this altitude.  It is a desolate place with no vegetation.  It is like walking on the moon.  You have the feeling that you are an astronaut that has landed to explore a new horizon. From a distance it appears the volcano rises to a point, but onced there you are amazed at the vast area to walk across to the crater.

Today, it has become a tourist attraction, but not in the days we would explore it.  There were no barriers, and you could walk as close to the craters as you desired.  Carefully, we would approach the edge to get the best photos possible.

There were small earthquakes that could be noted.  Fortunately, we never experienced anything except what would be considered mild.  When you live in a land with multiple volcanos, you accept the fact of the unexpected.  But you never let it dominant your life.  In fact, you live with little thought of what surrounds you.  Fear could grip you and paralyze you.  And then, what would life be like?

I suspect many people live their lives in expectation of the worst.  They always calculate what might happen, and they keep that so prevalent on their mind that they limit themselves in happiness and joy.  There are many things that can possibly befall us each day.  We need to live in the freedom and protection that is afforded us.  Our life is always under observation of the One who created us.  Why not trust Him for whatever each day may bring.

God gave a word to the Israelites as they approached a journey to a new land where they had never been.  There was reason for the Israelites to fear what was ahead, but God assured them they should not be afraid. “It is the land that the Lord your God cares for; the eyes of the Lord your God are continually on it from the beginning of the year to its end.”  (Deuteronomy 11:12)  The God who made that promise and fulfilled it is the same God today for us.  Do not worry.  Trust Him.  He knows all your tomorrows!

“Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble; when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.  Have no fear of sudden disaster or the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared.”  (Proverbs 3:35)
