Friends

Filed under: Uncategorized — lawsonjolly @ 5:00 am

There have been many people who have walked in and out of my life. But there are some who have left footprints in my heart. There are some whose footprints will forever remain. They are those called friends.

My life has been so blessed with good friends. They are people with whom I would entrust my life and all that I have. They have proved to be genuine in their love and acceptance of me. As a circle has no end, that is how long they will be my friend.

I could never acknowledge each friend, nor would I want someone to interpret that they are not a friend because I did not identify them in this blog. But there are a two friends who have been such a part of my life for so many years that I cannot look at my life  without their influence.

Before I speak of these friends, let me remind you of a description of a friend. A friend cares and loves you in spite of your faults. They can know all about you and still be your friend. The true friend has the courage to tell you what you should be told even if it offends you at the moment. A friend is someone to whom you can tell all your secrets.

I have such a friend. I met him over 50 years ago. Although distance has separated us for most of those years, I am aware he is always there. He impacted my life when I had no real purpose in life, and he did. He saw through the veneer of my life, and still accepted me as a friend. I knew he saw the shallowness of my life, the arrogance, and the hypocrisy. Yet, he accepted me as his friend. He definitely disapproved of much in my life, but he never rejected me. Thus, through this friendship, he influenced my life more than he will ever know.

Only a few months ago, we had opportunity to be together for a short period of time. I sensed at that time how my life is warmed just through his presence. I am so blessed to call this man my friend!

But I have another friend. She became my friend almost 50 years ago. She, much like my male friend, has impacted my life more than any other person. She would give her life for me. That is a true friend. She will surrender her own schedule and interests in order to give support and encouragement to me. That is a true friend. She will sacrifice her time and life to be my partner in ministry. That is a true friend. Of course, this friend is my wife, Judy! She is much more than a friend, but she is a friend indeed. She knows me better than anyone else, and she still loves me. Can there be a better description of a friend?

Life is so rich when we are blessed with friends. Many of you who read this blog are my friend, and I cherish you. Although I do not know everyone who reads this blog, you are a friend I have not yet met. But one day . . . we will meet!

Another thought: Always know what a friend Jesus Christ wants to be to you. “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command.” (John 15:13, 14)

Appreciate your friends. And be a friend!

“A friend loves at all time.”  (Proverbs 17:17)   “There is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.”  (Proverbs 18:24)   “Do not forsake your friend . . . . “  (Proverbs 27:10)

  1. I have some very special friends who have changed my life so much. More than they know. They have walked through some of my darkest hours, know all about me but still loved and accepted me. I feel grateful to call them my friends. I’m grateful to God for bringing them into my life when he did.
