Dedicated to . . . .

Some months ago, I wrote about heroes.  I spoke of the many people who have demonstrated courage and determination in dealing with cancer.  Most of these we met at Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa, Florida, located on the campus of the University of South Florida.

But I want to acknowledge the care and service provided by Moffitt.  This wonderful place is recognized as the best cancer center in the State of Florida, and among the top in the nation.  This institution records more than 272,000 visits a year, and is staffed by 3,989 caring individuals. This medical center is the result of the vision of H. Lee Moffitt when he served as a Florida state representative.  He was joined in his efforts by the dean of the University of South Florida’s College of Medicine.

It is those caring staff persons I honor today.  They exemplify the mission statement of Moffitt Cancer Center:  Dedicated to the Prevention and Cure of Cancer.  As we are around these staffers, we realize they are not there simply for income, but they exhibit a dedication to the task stated.  Judy has often commented that these care givers are like angels sent to work there.

My judgement is not based on a few visits, but through my long experience there as a patient. I feel qualified to make such statements.  I cannot count the number of personnel we have seen.  From the young men who park the car, to receptionists, greeters, volunteers, technicians, nurses, and doctors, they have become like special friends.  I can compare it much like going to church and finding that special fellowship between people you love.  As they have come to know our family, we have come to know them likewise.  The loving environment that is found in this institution could well be modeled in many other facilities.  None of us have any desire to be a patient there, but I can honestly say that Judy and I look forward to our visits because of these special relationships.  These remarkable people are to be honored!

Gifts of ministry, service, encouragement, healing, kindness, helpfulness, and love are not always found just among Christians!  God uses many people to provide for the needs of others!  I am thankful to all those at Moffitt whom God has placed in my life.

“I thank my God every time I remember you.”  (Philippians 1:2)
