Give Me Patience!

Filed under: Uncategorized — lawsonjolly @ 5:00 am

The other day Judy and I were at a home improvement store.  We were in the garden section when I remembered I needed something inside the store.  I told her I would quickly run inside.  I hastened to my destination.  I was almost running as I approached the automatic sliding doors.  When I did not slow my pace, I nearly slammed into the doors because I did not give them time to open.  I shook my head with a spirit of impatience.  I truly expressed a lack of patience.  I could not go faster than the doors would open, and I knew that.  So why was I feeling the emotion of impatience?

I believe we all know what it is to be impatient.  We are not a people who generally demonstrate patience.  Have you left a restroom at the restaurant with wet hands because you were not patient enough with the electric hand dryer?  Have you shown your impatience in traffic when you were late and the traffic was slow?  Have you ever gone from one check-out line to another at the store because you did not have the patience to wait?  We could mention others–like waiting for the water to boil on the stove, or the fish to bite, or the busy signal we get when calling a friend.

Patience is something we all desire.  For some time I have worked on material for another of my word series.  It is titled Patience.  It is an apt subject because we all joke at times, “God, give me patience and give it to me right now!”  I believe that every person would want to develop a patient life style.  Oh, life would be so much sweeter!

Someone said that patience is the ability to throttle your motor when you feel like stripping your gears.  Without a doubt, patience is an ability to wait without fretting.  I am not sure that an individual can control emotions enough to conquer impatience without a special strength within.  There is One from whom we can get that strength.

Included in the attributes of God is patience.  “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness.  He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9)  Peter assures us that God’s delay in bringing about the consummation of all that He has promised is not because of indifference, but it is from the patience of God.

Patience is a godly characteristic.  Yet we as mere humans can know this attribute.  Christ, the full embodiment of God, can reside in our lives through faith and give us the strength and ability to have patience as an attribute of our lives.  Wouldn’t you, like I, desire  patience as a part of our lifestyle?  Wouldn’t you like to be known as a person of patience?  It certainly will make life more pleasurable, as well as blessing others!  It can be ours!  Let’s claim it through Christ.

“Being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great patience.”  (Colossians 1:11)  “May the God who gives patience . . . .”  (Romans 15:5)
