Boyhood Dreams

Filed under: Uncategorized — lawsonjolly @ 5:00 am

The once-every-Saturday matinees fed my imagination!  Someday I would be rich and able to be a world traveler.  I would climb tall mountains, cross wide rivers, safari through dense jungles, and face natives who had never seen a white man!

Oh, those were the dreams of this boy!  I never considered the possibility of not being able to do so!  But there were roads to take before I could do all this.

I would have to become rich.  I would need the resources and that meant seeking a means of income that would bring instant wealth.  As a college student, I realized the road to my goal had slowed  somewhat . . . but I still had that boyhood dream.

And suddenly I was 21 years of age!  Where was I going with my life?  The condensed version of my experience was that God got hold of my life and let me know straight-forward that He had a plan for it!  Some resistance . . . but after some time, I surrendered.  Surrendering to the ministry was not easy.  I could not forget my dreams.  What about those world adventures?

Then a few months later, my dream was rekindled.  I became friends with a young lady who was a mission volunteer!  I had never known anyone who was going to be a missionary.  She told of her dreams and how she knew she would live an exciting and adventurous life.  It sounded so much like the dreams I had.  That began to appeal to me.  I saw some possibilities.  (I don’t mean with the young lady, but with the possibilities of missions to some far-away, intriguing land.)

About this time in 1956 some news began to sweep across the country.  Five missionaries to the Auca Indians in Ecuador had been killed.  It stunned my heart.  But from that news and the stories that were to follow, God planted something in my heart.  There was a sense of excitement.  I realized a call of adventure within the will of God.  I know that God was already assuring me that I would have all my childhood dreams fulfilled, plus more.

You have read in earlier blogs of how those dreams did come true.  I have walked those jungles, crossed those rivers, been the first white man into villages, and so much more!  God has more than fulfilled those boyhood dreams!

Don’t ever doubt the great reward of service in God’s kingdom.  God’s call can begin with a dream.  Yet, I believe God plants that dream in our hearts.  I hope you have a dream for your life and for the world.  May it be fulfilled as you follow Him!

“May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.”  (Psalm 20:4)  “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.”  (Proverbs 16:3)  “Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”  (Proverbs 19:21)
