A View of Motherhood

Filed under: Uncategorized — lawsonjolly @ 5:00 am

I don’t pretend to know much about motherhood!  Obviously, I am limited in understanding the role of mothers.  I certainly have no experience in this respected role!

But, as I reflected, I realized I do have an interesting perspective on motherhood.  I have had the opportunity to view motherhood from three perspectives.

First. I have observed motherhood from the view of a son.  From childhood, I saw a mother face all kinds of situations and always put the family first.  I felt her consistent love in all circumstances, no matter my conduct or behavior.  I was constantly guided by her concern for my life and future.  I was molded by her Christian commitment.  Yes, I know a little about motherhood from the experience of being a son!

Second.  I have observed motherhood from the view of a husband.  For almost fifty years I have seen the tender and caring heart of a mother.  I have witnessed a compassion that could come only from a mother.  I have seen her involvement in hurting lives of other people that only a mother could understand.  I have seen her give assurance and wisdom in matters that only a mother could give.  I know the prayers of intercession for others.  I see the grace of God demonstrated as I observe the life of this mother to whom I am married!

Third.  I have observed motherhood from the view of a father.  I have seen guidance and care of our children that only a mother could give.  I have seen a patience that is characteristic of a mother.  I have seen heartbreak of a mother from the child’s anguish and disappointment.  I have seen a love  for her children that comes from a mother’s heart especially designed by God.  I have seen a mother that knows her children are a treasured possession and a great trust from God.  I observe again and again a mother who would truly give her life, and does, for her children.  As a father, a parent, and one married to a beautiful mother, I have come to know something of motherhood!

And my conclusion?  The most influential, giving, and wise person in the world is a godly mother.  Certainly we have reason to honor mothers on Mother’s Day.  There is no human influence more important for the world than mothers!

“Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.   Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.  Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise . . . .”  (Proverbs 31:28-31)
