E.T., Are You Out There?

Filed under: Uncategorized — lawsonjolly @ 5:00 am

One of the all-time favorite movies is “E.T.”  This extraterrestrial came to earth.  He was an alien.  Yet, he was the friendly type.  And the most famous line in the move is “E.T., phone home!”  It was a movie.  But does alien life exist?

There has been a stir among the scientific community recently for those interested in extraterrestrial life.  Stephen Hawkins, a British physicist, believes that extraterrestrial life exists.  But he has advised that no contact should be made with them.  He believes that such life would come to the earth as alien overlords, and it would be a disaster for mankind.

Many believe that extraterrestrial life exists.  Yet, there are just as many who denounce such a theory.  Who really knows?  How can we know?  And if life is out there somewhere, should we attempt to contact such life?  Dr. Hawkins thinks not!

NASA has responded to Stephen Hawkins.  “It is too late,” a spokesperson reported.  NASA says that they have tried on many occasions to contact any alien life that might exist.  Several years ago, through the technology that is beyond my comprehension, NASA broadcasted across the cosmos the Beatles’ song, “Across the Universe.”  They got no response.

Over the last 25 years, there have been many groups that have sent out messages  hoping that if extraterrestrial life exists, contact would be made.  Of course, the efforts might not reach far enough into space!

Some of NASA’s deepest probes into space have carried plaques and recordings in case some contact was made.  The message simply said hello from Earth and gave directions on how to get here.  NASA does not make such contact a priority.  They do seek to know if there is some form of cell life on various planets.

It has been calculated that if any life could exist, it would be 5.9 trillion miles away.  Traveling at the speed of light, it would take generations for them to reach earth.  I cannot understand that, but I figure at a minimum of generations, a family would leave their planet and several generations would die (if they had our life expectancy) on the trip, and their grandchildren or great-grandchildren would arrive.  Can you imagine the type space ship it would take for that trip?

That distance can be a blessing if they were aggressive.  Dr. Shostak, senior astronomer at the SETI Institute, commented, “God has nicely buffered us!”

I can read this and realize I am not bothered by it.  What if some alien life exists somewhere?  What does that mean to my theology?  I can tell you what it means to me.  There is still one God.  If life does exist, my God is their God!  He is the Creator and Sustainer of all life everywhere!   He is the God of this world and the God of the entire universe!

“By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command . . . .”  (Hebrews 11:3)  “. . . I am the first and the last; apart from me there is no God.”  (Isaiah 44:6)  “He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.”  (Ephesians 4:10)  “in the beginning God . . . .”  (Genesis 1:1)
