How Can You Explain It?

Filed under: Uncategorized — lawsonjolly @ 5:00 am

For a short period, we had a neighbor in Costa Rica who did missionary work.  Charles felt impressed to have ministry along the many rivers in that land.  On one trip from a large lake up into one of the tributaries, Charles found himself in very precarious surroundings.  The river was not very wide, and had much growth along the edges with alligators being the principal inhabitants.

For some unexplained reason, as Charles was thinking how dangerous the water was, he fell out of the boat.  Having been sitting on the outer edge of the boat seat so that the steering arm of the outboard motor could extend out into the middle of the seat, his weight, as he went overboard, caused the small boat to make a U-turn.

Charles found himself in these dangerous waters.  He feared the alligators and anything else that might be in the water.  He knew he could not swim to shore because of the many alligators.  As he was treading water, he watched as the boat seemed to have corrected its turn and was going straight down the river toward the large, open lake.  He did not know what to do.  Yet, there was one thing he could do.  Charles began to call out to God.

Charles saw the boat reach the large lake.  Suddenly, the boat began to make another U-turn.  Now the boat headed back up river toward Charles.  The boat stayed directly in the middle of the river coming straight toward him.  Instantly he feared the boat would hit him.  Before he could decide what he should do, the outboard motor began to decrease in speed.  The motor stopped as the boat approached Charles.  It drifted and stopped within a few feet of him.  With some struggle, Charles pulled himself into the boat and was on his way again.

Now how can you explain that?  Many would offer explanations.  Some might attribute the turn of the boat as to currents in the lake.  Others would begin to speculate on possibilities.  But there are no physical explanations!  There are many things in this world I cannot explain.  But I can explain this one.  I can tell you exactly how it happened!  God did it!  There is no other explanation.

Now I will not tell you how God did it, but I know He did!  God can do anything in any way he desires.  Yes, He answered the prayer!  But His divine Presence could have responded, even without a call from Charles.  God may have used an angel.  God may have simply used His power.  We do not have to understand the ways God provides and help us.  We do not have to have an explanation of how God rescues or protects us.  We simply know that He is able —  and He can do it through His chosen method.

“Blessed is he who has regard for the weak; the Lord delivers him in times of trouble.  The Lord will protect him and preserve his life.”  (Psalm 41:2)  “Because he loves me, says the Lord, I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.”  (Psalm 91:14)
