Surprised! Shouldn’t Be!

Through the years I have heard people talk about a special need they had financially. There was a bill due to be paid, and they did not have funds that particular week.  Then, without expecting it, a check came to them–a refund, or gift from a family member, or some source that surprised them.

My wife an I have several such stories.  Years ago, when our daughter began to lose her vision as a young teenager, there was a need for a low-vision aid.  It was a much earlier model than is available today.  It was a table with a closed circuit television and camera.  It would magnify the printed or written pages sixty-six percent.  This was a necessity to aid her in her school work.

We arranged to purchase the machine and placed the order at a cost of several thousand dollars.  We knew it would be impossible to purchase except for some stock that had been given us years before.  Through the years the value of the stock had risen and now was valued at almost the same price as the machine.

The day after we signed the purchase agreement for the machine, we called a broker to sell the stock.  Within a few minutes, we were contacted that the company bankrupted and the stock was of no value.  We were faced with a great need for our daughter and with an obligation to which we had committed ourselves.

Our faith stood strong.  We knew the machine was necessary and that this purchase would happen.  We just did not know how.  A few days later, we received a letter from a mortgage company in another city.  We had sold our home there, closed on it, and purchased a home in this new city.  The letter from the mortgage company indicated that as a result of an audit, we had overpaid into the escrow.  Enclosed with the letter was a check for almost the exact amount of the machine!  Were we surprised?  Perhaps in the way the monetary need came–but not surprised because . . . !

God is so good!  And yet there was more!  That letter was followed by several others in the coming days from family and friends.  Those letter also included checks!  Those generous gifts made it possible for us to buy additional aids and attachments that helped our daughter even more.

This was a lesson for us . . . and a testimony to you.  God will care for His own!   He promised.  So don’t be surprised when it happens!

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.  Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?  Look at the birds of the air;  they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not much more valuable than they?  Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?  . . . For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.”  (Matthew 6:25,27,32)  “And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.”  (Philippians 4:19)

Trust Him to provide . . . but don’t forget to thank and praise Him!
