Read the Instructions!

Filed under: Uncategorized — lawsonjolly @ 5:00 am

We recently purchased some new patio furniture.  Of course, it required assembly.  Like most men, I enjoy the challenge of assembling things.  So, this would be a fun time.  Yet, I did not consider it a big challenge, only the expenditure of time.

I uncrated the chairs and tables.  Everyone knows what a table looks like and whether three, four, or six legs, what is the big challenge?  A table looks like a table — and anyone should be able to assemble it in no time.  I laid the various pieces around the garage.  The pre-drilled holes made it easy.  I began to attach the legs, aware that there was a center piece to the legs.  The various attachments to the legs were obvious and so I proceeded to insert the screws and tighten them.

Then as I began to attach the center pieces, they didn’t fit.  Or was I just making an excuse for my ego?  You see, I had not allowed for the tricky part of attaching the center pieces at a particular point in the placement of the legs.  Now I had to back up and start over.  The manufacturer had designed for it to be assembled in a certain order.

Why didn’t I read the instructions before I started?  Remember, it is a man-thing!  We like to move ahead with a confidence that we know how to do it.  Why read the instructions?  We believe we can do it without taking that time to read the assembly instructions.  I simply proved something of our manly confidence!  However, our confidence does not imply we know how to do everything right the first time!  (Thought you ladies would enjoy hearing that . . . and I also know I am now in trouble with some male friends!)

So, I looked at the instructions — of course, briefly.  I didn’t want to be seen reading “all” the instructions!  I spotted enough of the drawings that I realized the process needed to correctly assemble the tables.  I removed some legs I had already attached, and I did it “their” way.  Turns out, if I had read the instructions and followed the manufacturers’ way, I would have saved myself some time . . . and avoided this confession!

God was reminding me of something.  He has an instruction book.  I best read it before I try to do things my way!  God has to remind me of that quite often.  I not only forget, but I seem determined at times to go on and try things on  my own.  I am certainly old enough, and experienced enough, to know better!

The Bible is not just for pleasure reading like some novel.  Nor is it a book to simply tell us the errors we made in the past.  I believe the Bible, God’s instruction book, is to give me insight and direction on how to do things right, the first time!  Just imagine the loss in time, embarrassment, and failure I could avoid if I would  read the Instruction Book before I start living a single day!

“Let the word of God dwell in you richly . . . .”  (Colossians 3:16)  “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves.  Do what it says.”  (James 1:22)  “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”  (Psalm 119:105)  “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”  (Psalm 119:9)
