365 Times

In the movie, Facing the Giants, Mark Richt, University of Georgia football coach,  made a cameo appearance.  As he encouraged the football coach of the Eagles, he spoke about having no fear.  Mark stated that 365 times in the Bible are the words, “don’t fear.”  Perhaps I have heard that before, but it did not strike me as it did as I watched the film.

I do believe it needs some clarification, however.  I do not doubt the words of Mark Richt.  He is a friend of the family, a committed Christian, and a speaker of truth.  He would not have uttered those words if they were not true.  Likewise, the writers and producer of the movie would not have allowed those words if they were not true.

Although, regardless of the translation used, those exact words, “do not fear,” will not be found 365 times.  Search the original languages of Scripture, and they will not be there.  However, the teaching and admonition to not fear is found in similar phrases such as  “Fear not,” “Be not afraid,” Do not be frightened.”

And 365 times?  I will not try to count them.  If there are that many references, it would mean one for each day of the year!  Wouldn’t that be just like God to give that promise to us each day?  But, I was thinking.  God really only needs to say something to us one time!  One time should be enough!

Why then did God see to it that such a promise and admonition was recorded so many times?  I want to suggest that God really means for us not to fear or be afraid — regardless what we face each day!

It is easy to be frightened by circumstances that come into our life, and we don’t understand what it all means.  It is easy to be scared when we hear bad news about an illness, and we are unsure what the future holds.  It is easy to fear the unknown . . . or the prospect of what can happen to us in a situation or location.  Life brings many things to us for which it seems only natural to be fearful.

God who knows every detail in our life — who is never surprised — tells us over and over in His Word that we do not need to be afraid.  Then why can I find myself frightened by life at times?  Does it express a lack of faith?  Is it that I am not totally dependent on Him?  Am I looking at earthly circumstances rather than trusting God?

Each of us must find the answer for ourself.  But why not start with looking at the multitude of admonitions to us not to fear?  And let us believe God . . . and trust Him.

“Do not be afraid, for I am with you.”  (Genesis 26:24)  “I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”  (Psalm 23:4)  “Do not be terrified; do not be afraid.”  (Deuteronomy 1:29)  “Do not let your heart be troubled and do not be afraid.”  (John 14:27)  “When I am afraid, I will trust in you.”  (Psalm  56:3)
