Biggest Loser?

Filed under: Uncategorized — lawsonjolly @ 5:00 am

Many are familiar with NBC’s hit reality series The Biggest Loser.  Likewise, many are familiar with Abby Rike.  Recently, Judy and I had the privilege to spend time with her over the course of a couple of days.

Abby is an amazing young lady.  Her story is one of unfathomable tragedy, when in October 2006, her husband, her five and one-half year old daughter, and her three week old son were killed in a car crash.  With God’s amazing grace Abby has chosen to live a life that would inspire all of us.

She expresses a joy in her life that only God could place there.  While some would be ready to blame God for such a tragedy, she does not question God, but  simply responds to His leadership in her life.

She may be considered the “biggest loser” on television, but she is not a loser!  She is a testimony of a “winner” in spite of a life-changing circumstance.  As we talked, I realized how many people need to discover her source of strength and courage.  What Abby has found is not limited to a chosen few; it is available to all who will desire it.

I believe when stories like hers are heard, many will reflect on the story of Job in the Old Testament.  Job was a good man.  Yet, Job suffered profound loss.  He lost his worldly possessions, but the deepest loss was the death of his children.   He certainly questioned all the events . . . he expressed frustration.  He even felt he wanted to die.  But he trusted God.  He found the faithfulness of God even in such terrible events.

We cannot always explain tragedies that come into our lives.  That is because we cannot view life from God’s perspective.  It comes down to a matter of trust in the faithfulness of God.  Abby Rike is a living testimony of such faith. I encourage you to know her. Read her full story. (

God uses such persons to communicate to us of His presence and power in all circumstances if we will listen.  He has promised to be with us and meet our needs.

“The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.”  (Deuteronomy 33:27)  ” . . . this is what the Lord says . . . Fear not . . . when you pass through the waters, I will be with you and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.  When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned . . . For I am the Lord, your God.  (Isaiah 43:1-3)
