Clean Hands

As some Christmas dinner preparations were being made, a story was retold about my helping in some wedding preparations.  Well, not serious help . . . but at least a willingness to help!

For many years in our churches, Judy helped families with wedding receptions.  She became the consultant for the wedding and the coordinator of the reception.  In her role as coordinator, she was also the one to make the wedding cake and other amenities that would be served.

I have many memories of transporting the large wedding cakes to the church.  It was necessary for one of us to sit in the back seat and hold the cake to prevent any possible fall from the vibration of delivery.  It was always a tedious time . . . but I am glad to report we never had an accident and the cakes were perfect.

One of the amenities was mints in various shapes and flavors.  These were “homemade” in our kitchen.  Judy had two special friends that would always aid her in the preparation of the mints as well as  assist in the kitchen during the reception.

One evening as they were making the mints for a coming wedding, I came into the kitchen on my way out to make some visits.  I had taken a shower and shaved.  As I had a few extra minutes before needing to leave, I inquired if I could help.  The thick mint dough was ready to be kneaded.  I volunteered and began to knead the dough as instructed.

After helping for a few minutes, I left to meet my scheduled visits.  Shortly after I left, Judy and her friends began to create the small heart-shaped mints from the dough.  To be sure that the flavoring was perfect, Judy tasted some of the mints.

There was a reaction!  The other ladies gave the taste-test!  There was a reaction!  The flavor of the mint had been overcome with another flavor!  It was the taste of Old Spice!

Yes, I had not washed my hands after using my Old Spice aftershave lotion!  All that dough was contaminated and could not be used.  They had to start all over.  I would not know about this until I would return later that evening.  It was probably not a good night to return home!

Several lessons here for me.  I need to be clean of all that will contaminate my life and relationship with God.  “Who may ascend the hill of the Lord?  Who may stand in his holy place?  He who has clean hands and a pure heart . . . .” (Psalm 24:3,4)

Also, I must guard against that which would contaminate my life.  ” . . . don’t you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough?  (1 Corinthians 5:6)  It only takes what seems insignificant to corrupt my whole life.  ” . . . let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit . . . .”  (2 Corinthians 7:1)
