God is in Control

Filed under: Uncategorized — lawsonjolly @ 5:00 am

A recent trip to the barber shop gave me an opportunity to listen to several conversations about the coming election.  I prefer not to get into these discussion, but to be a listener.

I will acknowledge that most of the conversation . . . rhetoric . . . opinions . . . commentaries . . . prophesies . . . and even absurdities . . . were interesting.  However, I am glad that this group of men are not in charge of our country!  Many had valid points, while others were almost hysterical.

I did not know any of these men personally nor did they know me.  The barber is a friend and I suppose to either quieten the discussion or to genuinely know my opinion, he asked, “What do you think, pastor?”

Let the title pastor or preacher come up in group like this and there is sudden silence!  All eyes were upon me.  I felt they thought I might be the “deciding” vote, or they were suddenly confronted that a “man of the cloth” had been listening.  I wondered if some of them began to rethink what they had said.  (Not language . . . it had all been clean!)

I did not hesitate to speak.  My response was short.  “All I know is that the day after the election . . . the sun will still come up . . . and God will still be in control!”

Several of the men looked stunned and puzzled.  I believe they thought I was naive or just not with it!  But one man said, “Amen.”

My response seemed to put an end to a discussion about the coming election!  And I don’t think they wanted to travel down a spiritual route!

My response was not to avoid an opinion . . . or to give spiritual counsel.  My response was exactly my position!  That is not to say we should not express ourselves through an election . . . but it is a statement to help me keep my perspective.

God is still in control!  It does not matter who gets elected President.  There is no vote that will ever decide who is in charge of the world!  God’s authority is never determined by a vote!

And we must remember . . . God is accountable to no one!  God is sovereign — the word conveys the idea of superior and supreme!  And that is exactly what God is —  superior and supreme to all!

We need never walk in fear or doubt.  God is in charge!  He is in control!  I will not attempt to answer all the questions that come from such a statement when asked why certain things happen, etc.  I will simply trust the Eternal God who is in control!

“The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed in majesty and is armed with strength.  The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved.  Your throne was established long ago; you are from all eternity.”  (Psalm 93:1-2)

“The Lord reigns, let the nations tremble; he sits enthroned between the cherubim, let the earth shake. Great is the Lord in Zion; he is exalted over all the nations.  Let them praise your great and awesome name – – he is holy.”    (Psalm 99:1-3)

“In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will . . . .”  (Ephesians 1:11)

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him . . . .”  (Romans 8:28)
