Here We Go Again!

Filed under: Uncategorized — lawsonjolly @ 5:00 am

Yes, here we go again!  Disregard a blog from last April entitled Last Resignation.  I meant it then . . .  but things changed.  Because of health and age, I assumed that I had concluded my ministry by serving churches as interim pastor.

Things have changed!  And I am not assuming the role of an interim pastor . . . I have accepted the call to be the pastor!  Family and friends are . . . and will be shocked!  What church would call a 78 year old to be the pastor?  It is unusual and it is unusual for a man to have the energy and strength to accept such a responsibility.  But it is not the strength of a 78 year old, but the strength of God within a 78 year old!

Let me give you some information.  Because of health and age, I had found myself unable to fulfill responsibilities required . . . even of an interim pastor.  We have been staying busy with preaching opportunities and such, but God had other plans for us.  About six or seven weeks ago I realized one morning that my body was different — not in physical appearance, but in my joints and muscles.  I could feel the difference.  I felt like a 65 year old (not that some consider that young)!

I shared it with my wife . . . throughout the days it was confirmed!  My physical energy, the ability to walk, move and function was energized . . . without pain!  And no limp!  Over the next several days friends could see the difference.

What happened?  I have no explanation except that it is a work of God in my body.  To my knowledge, God has not healed me of any of my maladies.  But, He has rejuvenated my body!  I am able to run –not just jogging, but of course, not sprinting!  I am assuming I will continue to carry health issues the rest of my life, but there is a dramatic difference in my discomfort level and the ability to be more mobile.

My wife and I know this is all for a purpose.  We began to share with others and asked them to pray with us to know the purpose of all this.  Without details of the events, we were soon sitting down with a pastor search committee . . . and the result has been a call from the congregation to become their pastor.

We are convinced this was the purpose of my rejuvenation.  I had told my wife that first morning that I wanted to know what God desired and then to follow through with it.  I expressed that I did not want to be a Hezekiah.  Remember him in the Old Testament?  He was very sick, but God told him that he would give him another 15 years to live.  Obviously, God had a purpose in doing that for Hezekiah.  But Hezekiah did not use those years for God.  Instead, they were spent for his personal pleasure.  God certainly rebuffed Hezekiah.  I am determine not to follow the path of Hezekiah.

So we begin another chapter in our lives.  Oh, I am aware of my age and certain things I cannot do . . . or will not do.  I’ll not ride the Harley, surf, skydive, or a multitude of other things that I would like to do, but I will give my best energy to doing God’s will in my life.  And for now, it is to be the pastor of a church!

I trust you know the joy of the Lord in your life as I do!

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths.”  (Proverbs 3:5-6)
