Build it and they will come!

Remember that line from the 1989 movie, Field of Dreams?  An Iowa corn farmer, hearing voices, interprets them as a command to build a baseball field.  He does, and the Chicago Black Sox come. I am taking that line and saying, “Build a garden and they will come.”  Since a storm a few years back, we have developed the destroyed area into a wonderful garden.  My wife has wonderfully designed, and labored, to create a magnificent garden.  It always draws exceptional comments from others of this garden — complete with so many different plants, trees, flowers, walk-ways, arches, wrought iron, benches, bird baths, and other statuaries . . . and too many things to name! What we didn’t know was “build it and they will come.”

I refer to the many creatures that — well some grace the garden . . . while others seek to destroy it.  But they have come! We so enjoy the early morning as we watch the many varieties of birds — cardinals, doves, blackbirds, and bluejays, just to name a few, that come for ‘breakfast.’  Suddenly the rabbits are seeking to dine!  Throughout the day we are hosts to many other visitors — hawks, black snakes, squirrels, ravens, sand hill cranes, and various flying birds from the lake. And I cannot forget the many varieties of butterflies and lizards that grace the garden during the day.  Then at night — oh, yes, we have visitors at night —  armadillos, raccoons, and opossums.  And I cannot forget those friends that have been seen by neighbors that come at various times, such as foxes and even coyotes! We truly have a menagerie!

That was not the purpose of our garden — but we welcome most of our new friends.  We are thankful that many of them only are seen occasionally.  There are some, however, that we so enjoy their presence.

We built . . . they have come.  And we don’t live that far out in the country!

God has blessed with the multitude of creatures in this world.  We are grateful that we have the joy of hosting some of them!  And I so glad we have time to notice!  Look around today . . . enjoy God’s creatures!

  1. Wise words- take time out of your busy day to look around you and see God’s creation, and then thank Him for all that He gives us to enjoy. When I was working fulltime, I enjoyed seeings the birds, etc. but never really took the time to appreciate as I do now. If only we had this wisdom in our youth. Thank you again for your thoughts, they are remembered. Love to Ms. Judy and you.

  2. God’s creation and creatures are such a reminder that God made them all…….and for a wonderful reason. Just as He created us for His purposes we should seek to do as He instructs us to do, that’s what balances our world.
