Choice of a Nation

Filed under: Uncategorized — lawsonjolly @ 5:00 am

America is the greatest nation on earth!  God has blessed America!  America is not the chosen nation, but it has certainly been blessed.  We are not a great nation because of the vast land–Russia has more.  Not great because of the vast natural resources–South America has more.  Not great because of the number of people–India and China have more.

I believe we are a great nation because the nation was built on the principles of God’s truth.  Contrary to many opinions, greatness is not measured in military power or calculated in silver or gold.  Greatness is found in the moral fiber, the spirit of the people, and the acknowledgement of equality of all people.  And all these are a reflection of God’s call of righteousness.  Oh, without question, we have moved away from  strict adherence to  God’s standard.  And if we are to be a great nation, we must get back to the principles of God’s teachings.  I believe if we forget God, his goodness and mercy will depart from our land.

History reveals that nations or civilizations are doomed when they do not adhere to God’s principles and follow after their own way.  Arnold Toynbee, the great historian, in his Study of History, records that of 19 civilizations that have been destroyed, only three of these were destroyed by outside enemies.  His quote was, “Civilizations die from suicide, not by murder.”    He meant that 16 of these fell from within because of drunkenness, idleness, and immorality.  He placed a great emphasis on the lack of these civilizations to acknowledge and follow God.  He called for a reversal of such a pattern.

Edward Gibbon, in his Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, stated the reasons for the destruction of the great Roman Empire.  His list: Rapid increase in divorce; ridicule of the sanctity of the home; higher taxes and waste by public officials; a mad craze for pleasure and sporting events; gigantic armaments for war while compromising with the enemy to preserve peace; and the decline of religion.  The list may be appropriate for American!

America is confronted with a choice.  We can walk our own way or we can walk God’s way.  Our forefathers expressed their intent for America.  ” . . . with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence . . . .”  That protection is ours in response to our recognition of God’s requirement of His people honoring Him!

I believe America can remain great if it expresses that “firm reliance” on God! No nation ever fell when its people were right with God.  We may have moved away from God’s desire, but it is not too late.  God will restore and continue to bless America if we meet His conditions.  And what a marvelous time, the Fourth of July, to begin!

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”  (2 Chronicles 7:14)
