Lawson writes . . . sharing thoughts and memories

In my blog, Kimchi, I mentioned the story about spinach and promised to share it.  The lesson learned from spinach insured I would eat the Kimchi.

I grew up in a home where there were rules.  One of the rules was that when you came to the dinner table, you were to eat some of everything on the table.  Another rule was when food was on your plate, you ate in all.

There were times when I would come in to eat and I could smell it throughout the house.  And sure enough, when I came to the table there was a bowl of the slimy green stuff called spinach.

And the rule said I had to put some on my plate . . . and I had to eat it all.  I know I did everything to avoid eating it, but no excuses, no putting it off, and no rebellion about it.  And I ate it all!  Not because I wanted to . . . but it was the law of the house!

I would never have said it aloud, but I know I had this thought.  “One day I will grow up and move out of this house, and in my house we will never have spinach.”

The day did come . . . I moved out . . . got married . . . and we had our own home.  Then one day  . . . (Don’t get ahead o me.  Let me tell it!) . . . I came in for dinner.  I smelled it!  Oh, I forgot to tell my wife we were never to have spinach!

You know what I did?  I walked into the kitchen and told my wife how good everything smelled!  At the table, I served myself the biggest helping of spinach I had ever had!  I ate it!  I liked it!  And spinach is now one of my favorite foods!

What made the difference?  As a boy, I ate spinach because it was the law.  I am now eating spinach because of the love I have for my wife.  Love made the difference.  Now I loved my parents, but it was a different love.  When I fell in love with my wife . . . my life changed! The impact and power of her love for me and my love for her revolutionized my life.

Could I give you a testimony today?  This story of spinach illustrates what happened to me when I discovered the love Christ has for me and the love I now have for Him.

I could go to church — it was the law!  I could be kind to others — it was the law.  I could seek to be a moral person — it was expected.  But when Christ came into my life, His love changed me.  I desired to go to church, to be kind, moral, and a different person.  His love changed me!

Such power of Christ love!  You are missing true living if you are not motivated by this love.  It empowers you to live differently . . . to embrace others with love even if they look, behave, and have different cultural ways.  Allow His love to control you!  Life will be so much sweeter!

“For Christ love compels us . . . .”  (2 Corinthians 5:14)  “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has gone, the new has come.”  (2 Corinthians 5:17)
