Side Effects

The side effects of medicine!

It seems that every medication has side effects.  Think for a moment about some of your medications and the side effects.  Do you check those side effects when you begin new medications?  Perhaps you should!

I notice regularly at all the advertisements on television about various “miracle” medications.  The companies are very forthright about side effects.  Have you listened?

Now the following side effects are not obviously related to a particular medication, but almost every medication advertised includes many of the following.  Of course, the side effects are always introduced by the statement, “May cause . . . .”

Possible side effects we are warned about:  drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, difficult concentrating, swollen legs, weight gain, seizures, unusual bleeding or bruising, confusion, blurred vision, depression, suicidal thoughts, rash, itching, trouble breathing, nausea, blood clots, stroke, high blood pressure, convulsion, irregular heartbeat, numbness of hands/feet, fever, and . . . !  And the list goes on!

How often have you said, or heard others say,  “Take medication for one thing and it causes something else”?

Don’t think I am down on needed medications.  Many folks would not be alive today if it were not for medications.  It’s just that I am amazed at the warnings of possible side effects.  And for the sake of feeling better and extending our earthly life, we take the medicine!  We want to stay alive . . .  so we tolerate the side effects!

The side effects of life!

Medicine and life are both good, but both have side effects!  Life is so good, but there are many side effects that we would prefer to avoid.  A sickness, a financial setback, the loss of a loved one, a bad toothache, a broken foot, growing older . . . and like side effects from medicine . . . the list goes on!  But the old adage perhaps says it best, “You have to take the bad with the good!”

Every life does have side effects.  Events and situations come to our life that we would prefer to avoid, yet we have no control over these coming into our life.  But despite these side effects, we prefer life and living each day!  And often we remark about one of those side effects, “That’s just life!”  And it is!  But we do have a choice of how we handle side effects.  We can be angry or even sick from the side effects that come into our life, or we can choose to live life each day with happiness, even though some of those ‘side effects’ alter our life!

So, despite side effects that come into my life, I choose life . . . and I refuse to allow side effects to control my joy.  I choose to live in joy and expectation that every day will be full and blessed.

And it will be because of a relationship with Christ and a promise He made to me. “I have come that you might have life and have it to the full.”  (John 10:10)
