One More Word on Gratitude

Filed under: Uncategorized — lawsonjolly @ 5:00 am

Allow me to share another report of thanksgiving and praise.

I was walking one day down an old road outside Chongju, Korea.  On each side of the road were collections of old cardboard, scraps of wood, some small branches, pieces of plastic . . . and occasionally a piece of tin.

These were the “homes” of those who had escaped North Korea.  My heart was saddened as I realized the deplorable conditions under which they were living.

My reflections were interrupted by a shout that came from a woman sitting outside her make-shift house.  I nodded and waved with a smile.  Suddenly, she began to run toward me.  She spoke in broken English.  Her first words were, “I am a Christian.”  She assumed I was a Christian simply because I was an American.  She began to tell me her story.  She had escaped from North Korea at the outset of the Korea Conflict.  She and her family abandoned all their possessions.  In the midst of the escape, she found herself separated from her family.  She was now living alone with no means of support and in a terrible plight.

Her story caused my heart to be saddened for her.  But before I could respond to her situation, she broke out in thanksgiving and praise to God.  She was so grateful to God for where she was and the joy of being alive on that day.  Her heart was overflowing.

She had lost everything, including her family.  She had little prospect of any kind of future.  Yet, the value of her life in relationship with God was priceless.  She truly knew the blessing of being God’s child was the most important thing in her life.

Oh, did she teach me a perspective about life.  Much like the pilgrims, she focused on what she had . . . not on what she had lost or did not possess.

I urge you to join me in a focus on our blessings . . . rather than on what we “wish” we had or that life is not what we desire.  We are truly a blessed people.  We need to give daily thanks to our Heavenly Father.

“Praise the Lord, my soul; and forget not all is benefits . . . .”  (Psalm 103:2)

  1. Thank you, Pastor Jolly. This really touch me this morning especially, with all the uncertainties of the wold today. I’m so thankful to have had both you and Judy, as a big part of my life during my early Christian Years. I learned a lot from you you both, and feel blessed to be able to reconnect again even if it’s through Facebook, and now your blog.

Your reflection through these stories, are so inspirational! I do hope one day to see you, and hug you both again, and thank you in person for your influence in my life.

    Love you Brother! Randy
