Lawson writes . . . sharing thoughts and memories

Today is the milestone I have been anticipating.

A milestone comes from the days of Roman occupation over Israel.  Roman soldiers were allowed to compel young Jewish boys to carry their backpack or some other item for them.  However, the soldier could not conscript the boy for more than one mile.

Thus the boys would measure off one mile from their home and there they would place a marker – usually a large stone.   That marker became known as a milestone.  A milestone today represents an achievement . . . an accomplishment . . . a goal.

Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953 celebrated a milestone when he climbed Mount Everest, earth’s highest mountain.  I feel as though I have conquered a mountain and I celebrate.  Today I rejoice over reaching  the milestone of being 80 years of age.

But as Sir Hillary exclaimed, “There is still a milestone ahead.”  What that might be, he did not reveal.  For me, in the arena of age, I am looking ahead to the next milestone of turning 90 years of age.  That is the next milestone in my goal of living to 100.

But for today, I celebrate, rejoice, and enjoy this birthday.  I will live it in fullness with the expectation of even more wonderful days to come.

God has been so wonderful to me . . . no man has ever had such a joyful and fulfilled life.  I give praise and honor to Him for His gift of living each day.

Enjoy life!  Celebrate today . . . no matter your age or circumstance!

“The fear of the Lord adds length to life . . . .”  (Proverbs 10:27)  “For through me your days will be many, and years will be added to your life.”  (Proverbs 9:11)
