Rudolph the Reindeer – – Female?

Filed under: Uncategorized — lawsonjolly @ 5:00 am

“On Dasher, on Dancer, Prancer, and Vixen.  On Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen . . .”  You know the story! The eight reindeer that pull Santa’s sleigh?

But wait . . . there is one more!  Rudolph!  He truly has become the most famous of all!  Of course, Rudolph is a later addition!  From the story book, Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, we now count nine reindeer!  The original eight pulled in pairs while Rudolph is out front leading the way and providing light!

Here is something to ponder today!  Why do all the reindeer have male names?  Does that mean they were all male reindeer?  How do we know whether they are male or female?

According to authorities in Alaska, all the reindeer were probably female!  Surprised?  And how do they know?  Most male reindeer shed their antlers prior to December.  The female reindeer do not shed their antlers until spring after giving birth.  This seems to be a fact that is proved every year!  But in all the pictures, the reindeer have antlers!

I am not suggesting that  we make some political issue out of this . . . or that we  rename the reindeer . . . or that we criticize the originator of the great story of Santa and his reindeer.  I would just like to have some fun with the facts.

Perhaps only female reindeer could do the job!  Someone  said only a woman could drag a fat man in a red suit around the world in one night without getting lost!  (I just scored points with you ladies . . . but I better look behind me when I am around some gentlemen!)

All of this is simply to remind you to enjoy the season.  Don’t become so stressed that you miss the happiness and joy of this time of year.  Remembering the Reason for the Season will bring comfort and joy!

” . . . a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”  (Luke 2:11)
